Today I read "Privilege, Power and Difference by Alan Johnson. The excerpt spoke about the topic of being different in this country whether it's your race, gender or sexuality. More specifically the problems faced when you are a race, gender or a sexuality that isn't mainstream or normalized. In class we talked about S.C.W.A.A.M.P. which stands for straightness, christianity, whiteness, able-bodiness, americanness, maleness and property ownership. These are all things that factor in to how you're viewed and treated in our society. In the excerpt by Alan Johnson he uses Rodney King as an example of how the color of your skin can change how you get treated. Rodney King was beat by white police officers and the whole incident was recorded. The cops who were involved were acquitted of all charges and got away with it. This example shows the power that comes along with being a white male in this country. If you take S.C.W.A.A.M.P and apply it to the positions of power in this country you will see how our society is dominated by people with these traits.

    I think its a great point that society is sadly dominated by people with traits that don't see the wrong in realizing their power they hold when it comes to their own race.

     With everything we have done this semester, there are a few things that I believe will really stick with me as I move on through school and into the real world. Blog Post 8

 Rodriguez describes how he acquired English in "Aria," not only as a language but also as a means of assimilating into American culture. At first, he says, he felt lost and uneasy, as if English were a "public" language that wasn't his. His "private" language was Spanish, which he used for comfort, family, and home. He had to learn English, but it also caused a rift with his family because he began to identify Spanish as more "other" and English as more "American." Many of us who were raised bilingually, I believe, can identify with this issue. I feel like I'm interacting with the outside world when I speak English, but there's something unique about speaking my own tongue with family.  I've always believed that education should be an equalizing environment where everyone has an equal opportunity. However, reading Toward Ending Ableism in Education by Thomas Hehir and witnessing the discussion between Judith Butler and Sunaura Taylor in Examined Life has caused me to reconsider the true meaning of "fairness" and "inclusion," particularly for students with disabilities. Hehir and Butler both push us to look past band-aid solutions and truly examine the causes of ableism in our structures, especially in educational institutions. Hehir argues in Toward Ending Ableism in Education that our educational system actively discriminates against disabled students in ways that limit their access to education, rather than merely ignoring them passively.
